Bangladesh Earring 1890
Zoom This! Back 1890, my great grandma had bought a set of gold earrings to wear on her wedding day. The earring was bought in Khulna, Bangladesh around August of 1890. After her death in 1958, she passed down to her oldest daughter which was my grandma. The earring itself is 22 karat gold with sixteen small golden balls that are decorated around the earring. On the top part of the earring, there is a symbol shaped like a nine which is also decorated with golden balls. On the bottom part of the earring, there is a crown shaped object that hangs off of the nine.
Near the bottom part of the crown shape, there hangs eight golden balls which are held by small golden chains. In Bangladesh, gold was and still is a symbol of wealth and prosperity. The nine shapes that are above the crown symbolizes peace, togetherness, and especially luck. The earring was bought in Dhaka where most of the civilization was back at that time, such as stores, restaurants, ect. On my great grandmother’s wedding day, the earrings worn on the wedding day were accompanied by many more gold accessories. The Earrings originated in India where the gold was bought to make the earrings. The gold was bought by the Jewelry store owner in Khulna, Bangladesh where he and some other workers hand-made the earrings.
